As cinco leis da sustentabilidade :: The five laws of sustainability

A primeira lei da sustentabilidade pede que nos atuamos, vivemos de uma forma que não há aumento de substâncias extraídos da crosta terrestre como metal pesado no solo, plástico nos mares ou tambêm excesso de carbono na atmosféra – significando que nos temos que nos fiscalizar para usar energia renováveis, sem lixo e sem emissão através das nossas atividades.


A segunda lei pede que nos atuamos e vivemos de uma forma que não há aumento de químicas e compostos produzidos por a humanidade como dioxinas e outras químicas pesadas – significando a mudança para a química verde.

A terçeira lei pede que nos atuamos e vivemos de uma forma que não há degradação física e destruição da natureza e dos processos naturais, como a sobre-exploração das florestas, invadindo mais e mais as últimas áreas da vida selvagem, drenando pântanos, esgotando os oceanos do mundo ou o aquecimento da atmosféra.

A quarta lei pede que nos atuamos e vivemos de uma forma que todos os humanos estão com condições de satisfazer as necessidades básicas deles. Nas palavras do economista chileno Manfred Max-Neef, isso significa que todos devem ter acesso a uma renda de subsistência, proteção, afeto, compreensão, participação, lazer, criação, identidade e liberdade. Tudo o que fazemos, temos de incluir as necessidades dos seres humanos, pois somos parte da natureza.

A quinta lei diz: "Se não for divertido, não é sustentável". Em todo o nosso trabalho e nas nossas atividades nos temos que nos divertir e lembrar que é justamente a nossa atitude e o jeito como enfrentamos a vida que determina se nossa experiencia na terra será grandioso, maravilhoso ou miserável.

Gerações futuras vão pensar da sustentabilidade do mesmo jeito que pessoas hoje em dia pensam da justiça e dos direitos humanos – como um fato natural e muito óbvio. O desafio da nossa geração é deixar de quebrar as leis, o mais rapidamente possível, para que as futuras gerações de seres humanos - e todas as outras espécies - terão uma chance de prosperar.

The first law of sustainability says that we must act and live in such a way that there is no increase of substances extracted from the Earth’s crust, such as heavy metals in the soil, plastics in the ocean or an excess of carbon in the atmosphere meaning that we should go for renewable energy, zero waste and zero emissions from all our activities.

The second law says that we must act and live in such a way that there is no increase of chemicals and compounds produced by humanity such as dioxins, PCBs and DDT meaning a shift to green chemistry.

The third law says that we must live, behave and flourish in such a way that there is no progressive physical degradation and destruction of nature and natural processes, such as over-harvesting forests, invading more and more the space of wildlife animals, draining wetlands, exhausting the world’s oceans or warming the atmosphere.

The fourth law says that we must live, behave and flourish in such a way that all humans are able to meet their basic needs. In the words of Chilean economist Manfred Max-Neef, this means everyone should have access to a subsistence income, protection, affection, understanding, participation, leisure, creation, identity and freedom. Whatever we do, we must include the human needs, for we are part of Nature.

The fifth law states, “If it’s not fun, it’s not sustainable.” In all our work and activities we must feel joy and remember that it is exactly our attitude to life that determines whether we experience it as great, miserable or miraculous.

Future generations will think of sustainability the way most people today think of justice and human rights – as being both natural and obvious. The challenge to our generation is to cease breaking the laws as quickly as possible so that future generations of humans – and all other species – will have a chance to flourish.
